Not Forgotten

This site is to share public records regarding patients and employees of the Traverse City Asylum, State Hospital for the Insane, Northern Michigan Asylum, Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital.
There is so little information available regarding patients, often known as inmates, that I felt it was important to post, make public, the little information available, as a genealogist, researcher and briefly, an "inmate" shortly before it closed.
My homage to those who suffered.

Murders at the Asylum

From the book, "Northern Michigan Asylum", 3 murders took place there.
The first one, whereby a female patient killed her roommate, was told to us on our tour. At that time, two residents were occupying one room. After this incident, every patient had a room to themselves. This event happened 1905-1906.
The second reference simply states "one patient killed another," 1911-1912.
The third says a patient was strangled to death by another patient, 1913-1914

Electroconvulsive Therapy

ECT, or electroconvusive therapy was used at the Asylum beginning in the 1940's. It was a successful form of treatment for depression.
At first, the treatment was given "unmodified", without anesthesia which often produced unpleasant side effects. In the 1950's, treatments were given "modified" and anesthetics, like Sodium Pentothal and muscle relaxants were used.

ECT was first introduced at the asylum in 1946.

Asylum Opening

On November 30, 1885, the first patients arrived. 45 were transferred from the Eastern Michigan Asylum at Pontiac, and about 250 from the Michigan Asylum at Kalamazoo. The Asylum was to serve 39 counties, including all of the Upper Peninsula.

Name Change from Asylum to State Hospital

The name of the Northern Michigan Asylum was changed to Traverse City State Hospital in 1911 by the Legislature.

Charles Carlson abt 1840 - August 13, 1898

In researching through the Michigan Death Records, I sometimes stumble upon a person with a similar name and an intruiging story. Carl and Charles Carlson is one such happenstance.
Charles Carlson was not a patient at the Asylum...he may have been at one point. He might have benefitted from a stay. He committed suicide by drowning. Charles was born in Norway and was a fish peddler. He was single and 58 years old. Buried Traverse City, Michigan.
I find it interesting to note that the certificate reads "suicide" as someone must have known he had been thinking about it, maybe he left a note, or maybe he died in front of others. It didn't say "accidental" or just plain "drowning." A fish peddler from Norway...you'd think he knew how to swim.
Is this a life story about mental illness, depression, the struggles of immigrants? I don't know, but I thought it was interesting to note.

Occupations of Patients

I've found online death records for 100-150 roughly, patients who died at the asylum.
The vast majority of men were farmers and laborers. The unusal occupations I have found for males: musician, physician, 2 miners from the upper peninsula, boiler maker, goldsmith, blacksmith, cooper, carpenter and lumberman.
For women, it is quite basic, housewife, farmers wife, domestic and housekeeper. I've found 2 single women who were school teachers. One died of tb, the other of cancer.

Nephritis

is inflammation of the kidneys and may involve the surrounding tissues.
Nephritis is often caused by infections, toxins and autoimmune disorders.

Apoplexy

: unconscious or incapacity resulting from a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke,
a sudden, usually marked loss of bodily function due to rupture or occlusion of a blood vessel.

Asylum Patients Causes of Death

This applies only to the 1900 patients in which I've located death records, maybe 100 or so.
#1 Cause Epilepsy
#2 Pulmonary Tuberculosis
#3 various forms of heart disease
The other causes which had afflicted 10 or less patients; senility, cancer, intestinal obstruction, organic brain disease, dementia and apoplexy, which I need to look up.
Oh, Nephritis, which I think is kidney disease would be #4.
